Planning Recessed Lighting Before Anyone Cuts the Ceiling
Every recessed light is a permanent hole. Twenty minutes of planning is worth more than any amount of fixture shopping.
Start with what the room is for
Lighting a kitchen where people cook is a different problem from lighting a living room where people watch a screen. Before spacing anything, decide what each area needs:
- Ambient — the general fill that lets you walk around.
- Task — light aimed at a counter, a desk, a sink.
- Accent — a wall, artwork, a fireplace.
Rooms that feel like a supermarket usually have a grid of identical downlights doing all three jobs at once.
Spacing: a starting point, not a rule
A common starting point for general lighting is to space fixtures roughly half the ceiling height apart — an 8-foot ceiling suggests about 4 feet between lights. Keep them off the walls by roughly 2 to 3 feet so the light washes down the wall rather than clipping the top of it.
Then adjust for reality: where the joists run, where the HVAC ducts are, whether the ceiling is a plane or has a beam through the middle of it, and where a fixture would end up directly over someone's head at the dining table.
Beam angle changes the answer
A narrow beam puts a tight pool of light on the floor and leaves dark space between fixtures. A wide beam overlaps and reads as even light. For general ceiling lighting a wider beam usually looks better; for accenting a specific object, a narrow one does the job with one fixture instead of three.
Color temperature: pick one and stay there
Measured in kelvin. Around 2700K reads warm and residential. 3000K is slightly crisper and very common in kitchens. 4000K and up starts reading commercial.
The mistake is not picking the "wrong" number — it is mixing them. Two 3000K cans next to a 2700K fixture in the same sightline is visible and looks like a mistake, because it is one. Many current LED fixtures are field-selectable, which helps, as long as somebody actually sets every unit to the same position.
Dimming is a system, not a switch
LED dimming only works when the driver and the dimmer are compatible. Mismatches show up as flicker, a buzz, a limited dimming range, or lights that drop out entirely at the bottom of the slider.
Check the fixture manufacturer's compatibility list before buying dimmers, and put fixtures that will be dimmed together on the same dimmer type.
Mark it on the ceiling first. Painter's tape on the ceiling in the actual positions, then live with it for a day. It costs nothing and it catches the "that one is right over the doorway" problem while it is still free to fix.
Practical constraints worth checking early
- Insulation contact. Fixtures in an insulated ceiling need to be rated for contact with insulation, and airtight versions reduce the amount of conditioned air leaving through the holes.
- Shallow ceilings. Low-profile LED units fit where a traditional can never would.
- Joists and ducts. The layout that looks right on paper sometimes lands on a beam. Better to find that with a stud finder than with a hole saw.
- Switching. Decide which lights are on which switch before the wiring goes in. Rewiring the switching afterwards means opening the ceiling again.
