Knob-and-Tube, Cloth and Aluminum: Reading the Wiring in an Older LA Home
Old wiring is not automatically bad wiring. What matters is which kind it is, what has been done to it since, and what you are asking it to do now.
Knob-and-tube
The oldest system you will still find in service. Individual conductors run through porcelain tubes where they pass through framing and are held on porcelain knobs along it. The hot and neutral run separately, spaced apart, and the insulation is a rubber compound under a woven jacket.
Two things matter about it:
- There is no equipment grounding conductor. Every receptacle on it is a two-prong receptacle for a reason. Replacing those with three-prong outlets without addressing the ground is one of the most common — and most misleading — things done to old houses.
- It was designed to shed heat into open air. Burying it in blown-in insulation, which happened to a great many houses during energy retrofits, removes the thing that kept it cool.
Intact, uninsulated, lightly loaded knob-and-tube in a dry attic is not an emergency. Brittle, spliced-into, buried, or feeding a modern kitchen, it is a different conversation.
Cloth-jacketed cable
The generation after knob-and-tube: two or three conductors together in a woven cloth jacket, often with a tar-like coating. Early versions have no ground; later ones have a reduced-size ground conductor.
The failure mode is the insulation itself. Decades of heat make the rubber brittle, and it cracks and falls off exactly where it was flexed — at the box, where somebody's hand pushed the device back in. A circuit can test fine and still have bare copper inside every box on it.
Aluminum branch-circuit wiring
Used in some homes built in a window around the mid-1960s to mid-1970s for ordinary 15- and 20-amp circuits. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper and oxidises differently, so terminations can loosen and overheat over time.
Important distinction: aluminum service-entrance and feeder conductors are normal and fine and are used routinely today. It is the small branch-circuit aluminum wiring that has the documented history.
The accepted remedies are specific listed repair methods at each connection — not simply tightening screws, and not a blanket "replace the whole house" reflex.
The two-prong outlet question
If a receptacle has no ground, there are legitimate options:
- Leave it as a two-prong receptacle.
- Protect it with a GFCI and label it as required — this gives shock protection even though a grounding conductor is not present.
- Run a grounding conductor, or rewire the circuit.
What is not an option is a three-prong receptacle with nothing behind the third hole. That is invisible from the outside, which is precisely the problem: every surge protector and appliance plugged into it assumes a ground that is not there.
Quick check anyone can do. A three-dollar receptacle tester from a hardware store will tell you whether an outlet is actually grounded and whether hot and neutral are reversed. It will not find everything, but it finds the two mistakes that are most common in older houses.
When old wiring genuinely needs to move up the list
- You are opening walls anyway for a remodel.
- Insulation was added over knob-and-tube.
- Outlets or switches are warm, discolored, or the plugs fall out.
- There are three-prong receptacles on a system that has no ground.
- You are adding a large modern load — a kitchen, an AC system, a charger.
