Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping — And What It's Actually Telling You
A breaker is not a light switch. Every time it snaps off it is telling you something specific, and the message changes depending on how it trips.
A tripped breaker is a success, not a failure
The breaker in your panel exists to open the circuit before the wire behind your wall gets hot enough to matter. When it trips, the protection worked. The part worth paying attention to is why it worked, because resetting it over and over does nothing about the cause and slowly wears out the breaker itself.
There are three ordinary reasons a breaker opens, and they behave differently.
Overload: too much on one circuit
This is the most common one in older El Sereno and East LA houses, where a whole room may sit on a single 15-amp circuit that was sized for a lamp and a radio. Add a space heater, a microwave and a hair dryer and the circuit is being asked for more than it was built to carry.
How it reads: the breaker holds for a while — seconds to several minutes — and then trips. It usually happens at the same time of day, when the same appliance turns on.
- Unplug things one at a time and see what stops the tripping.
- Space heaters, window AC units, microwaves and hair dryers are the usual suspects. Each can pull most of a 15-amp circuit by itself.
- If you cannot move the load somewhere else, the real fix is a dedicated circuit, not a bigger breaker. Putting a 20-amp breaker on 14-gauge wire removes the protection instead of solving the problem.
Short circuit: a hot conductor touching where it should not
Here the breaker trips immediately and hard, often with a pop, sometimes with a scorch mark or a burnt smell at a receptacle or a switch. This is not something to keep resetting.
Common causes are a damaged cord, a staple driven through cable during a remodel, a wire nut that let go inside a box, or water that got into an outdoor receptacle.
Stop resetting it. If a breaker trips the instant you push it back on, leave it off and get someone to trace the circuit. A short is a heat event looking for somewhere to happen.
Ground fault: current leaving the circuit
GFCI devices watch the current going out against the current coming back. If those two numbers stop matching — because current found another path, possibly through a person — the device opens in a fraction of a second.
How it reads: the GFCI receptacle or breaker trips, usually somewhere wet. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor receptacles, pool and spa equipment.
Sometimes it is genuinely a fault. Sometimes it is a GFCI at the end of its life — they do wear out — or moisture in an outdoor box that dries up and behaves again. Both are worth checking rather than guessing.
The tell-tale that means call someone today
- Any burning smell, discoloration or warmth at a panel, outlet or switch plate.
- A breaker that feels loose, will not reset, or resets and trips instantly.
- Buzzing or crackling from the panel.
- Lights that dim noticeably when a large appliance kicks on, across the whole house.
Those are not "wait and see" symptoms. Everything on that list points at heat, a loose connection, or a panel that is undersized for how the house is used now.
What to write down before you call
Ten seconds of notes will save you a diagnostic visit's worth of guessing:
- Which breaker — the number, or what stops working in the house.
- Does it trip instantly, or after a while?
- What was running when it went?
- How long has it been doing this?
- Anything you can smell, hear or see at the panel or the outlets.
With those five answers, most breaker problems can be narrowed down before anyone opens a wall.
