Installing an EV Charger at Home: What to Sort Out Before the Car Arrives

Most home charging problems are not charger problems. They are panel and placement decisions that got made in the wrong order.

Level 1 and Level 2, in plain terms

Level 1 is the cord that came with the car plugged into an ordinary 120-volt outlet. It adds roughly a few miles of range per hour. For a plug-in hybrid, or for someone who drives a short commute and parks all night, it is genuinely enough.

Level 2 is a 240-volt circuit, the same class of circuit as an electric dryer or range. It typically adds several times the range per hour. For a full battery EV that gets driven daily, this is what people end up wanting.

The question that decides everything: what can your panel carry?

A Level 2 charger is a large continuous load. Whether your service can take one is not a guess — it comes out of a load calculation that accounts for the house's existing demand and the charger's rating.

Three outcomes are common:

  • Room to spare. Add the circuit and you are done.
  • Tight. Options include a lower-amperage charger, a unit that can be set to a reduced current, or load-management equipment that keeps the charger from running at the same time as another big load.
  • Not enough service. Now you are looking at a service or panel upgrade, which changes the size of the project considerably. Better to know this in week one than after the car is in the driveway.

Hardwired or plug-in?

Many Level 2 units can be either hardwired or plugged into a 240-volt receptacle. A receptacle makes the unit easy to swap or take with you. Hardwiring is usually the choice for outdoor installs and for higher-amperage units. Check what the specific charger's instructions allow — the listing for the equipment governs.

Placement: walk it before you drill

Measure with the car parked the way you actually park it, not the way you imagine you will. Things that catch people out:

  • The charge port is on a different corner than the last car you owned.
  • The cable has to reach across the car, not just to it.
  • You back into the garage half the time.
  • The wall you picked is the one the garage door opener rail runs along.

Outdoor installs need equipment rated for the location and a weatherproof arrangement that stays weatherproof with the cord plugged in.

Order of operations. Load calculation, then charger choice, then placement, then permit, then install. Doing it in that order is the difference between one visit and three.

Permits and rebates

A new 240-volt circuit is permitted work. Ask up front how the permit and inspection will be handled. Separately, utility and municipal EV charging incentives exist and change from year to year — check the current program with your utility directly, because the terms (and whether a permit is required to qualify) move around.

What to have ready when you call

  1. The car, or at least which one is coming.
  2. The charger model, if you have already bought one.
  3. A photo of the inside of your panel with the cover on, showing the main breaker rating.
  4. Where the car parks and where you would like the unit.
