GFCI vs AFCI: Which Protection Goes Where, and Why

One protects people from shock. The other protects the building from fire. Both have a test button, which is where most of the confusion starts.

GFCI: protects people

A ground-fault circuit interrupter compares the current flowing out on the hot conductor with the current returning on the neutral. If those differ by a very small amount, current is leaving the circuit by some other path — and a person can be that path. The device opens in a fraction of a second, fast enough to matter.

That is why GFCI protection lives where water and people meet: kitchen counters, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas, outdoors, crawl spaces, and around pools and spas.

AFCI: protects the building

An arc-fault circuit interrupter looks for the electrical signature of arcing — the sputtering, intermittent discharge that happens at a loose terminal, a nicked conductor, or a cord crushed under furniture. That kind of arc does not draw enough current to trip an ordinary breaker, but it produces plenty of heat.

AFCI protection is required across most living areas of a dwelling: bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, and more.

Dual-function devices

In places that need both — a kitchen or a laundry area, for instance — dual-function devices provide GFCI and AFCI protection together, in one breaker or one receptacle.

The part almost everyone skips

Both device types have TEST and RESET buttons, and both are meant to be tested regularly. Press TEST; it should trip. Press RESET; it should come back. If TEST does nothing, the device is not protecting anything — replace it.

They wear out. A GFCI in an outdoor box that has been through fifteen summers will eventually stop responding. That is normal, expected, and cheap to fix — but only if someone actually presses the button once in a while.

One receptacle can protect several. A single GFCI receptacle wired to protect downstream outlets covers all of them. That is why the outlet in your garage sometimes goes dead when a GFCI in the bathroom trips — they are on the same circuit. If you lose power to an outlet, find and reset every GFCI in the house before assuming something broke.

Nuisance tripping is data

An AFCI that trips repeatedly on one circuit is usually reporting something: a shared neutral, a stapled cable, a damaged cord, or an appliance with a motor that produces a similar signature. Older AFCI designs were more prone to false trips than current ones.

Either way, the fix is to find what it is reacting to. Swapping the AFCI back to a standard breaker removes the report without removing the reason for it.

Which code applies to you

Requirements changed several times over the last two decades and apply based on when the work is done, not when the house was built. An existing home is not required to be brought up to current requirements everywhere — but the circuit you are modifying usually is. Ask specifically what applies to the work you are having done.
