How to write clear copy for your small-business website

Start with the questions customers actually ask. The aim is to explain your service clearly enough for someone to decide whether to contact you.

Explain it as you would in a conversation

“I repair electrical installations in homes” tells a visitor more than “comprehensive residential solutions.” Describe the work, who it is for and where you provide it. Recording a short explanation and editing the transcript can help preserve your natural voice.

Replace broad claims with useful answers

Words such as reliable or professional need support. Explain what happens during a visit, what the quote includes and how changes are handled. Use real conditions; do not invent a guarantee or a same-day promise to make the text sound stronger.

An illustrative structure is: “We inspect the problem, send a quote and agree a date before starting.” Adapt it to your actual process. If timing depends on parts or access, say so.

Remove repetition, keep important details

Cut introductions that delay the answer and paragraphs that repeat the heading. Shorter is useful when the meaning survives. Keep exclusions, preparation requirements and information needed to choose a service, even when that makes a page longer.

Let headings explain the journey

Read only the headings in order. Can a visitor tell what you do, what is included, why they can trust you and how to start? Use the words customers use in messages and calls rather than internal terminology.

Review the copy with a real task

Ask someone unfamiliar with your business to find a service, explain its scope and locate the next step. Note what they misunderstand. Revise the unclear passage before adding more decorative text.

If you work alone, a first-person voice can be accurate and reassuring. A team should describe its actual roles. There is no universal word count: the useful length depends on the questions the page needs to answer.
