Every kitchen remodel budget is really five big decisions wearing a trench coat. Get clear on these before you talk to any contractor and the whole project gets easier — and cheaper.
1. Does the layout change?
Keeping sinks, stoves and walls where they are is the single biggest money-saver. Moving plumbing or gas lines, or opening a wall, is where budgets jump. Sometimes a layout change is worth every penny — but make it a conscious choice.
2. Cabinets: the biggest line item
Cabinets typically eat 30-40% of a kitchen budget. Stock cabinets, semi-custom and full custom can differ by 3x. In many Queens homes, semi-custom hits the sweet spot of fit and price.
3. Countertops: material drives price
Quartz has become the default for good reason: durable, sealed, consistent. Granite and butcher block cost less; marble and exotic stone cost more and demand upkeep.
4. Appliances: decide early
Not just for budget — cabinet and counter measurements are built AROUND your appliances. Choosing them late causes expensive rework.
5. Timing and phasing
A full kitchen means 3-6 weeks without one. Planning around holidays (or doing the work while you travel) is free; changing your mind mid-project is not.
The honest tip
Bring us your wish list AND your real budget. A good contractor tells you what fits, what doesn't, and where the smart trade-offs are — before demolition, not after.
